Books

I started thinking about the books I've read this year and realized that my usual voracious appetite has been...dieting...this year. Not sure what the difference is: blogging, maybe, or all the surgery and physical therapy stuff, plus (and this is the biggest one) writing my own stuff. Whatever the reason, after seeing my abysmal list, I am ashamed of myself!

Here is my pathetic reading list for 2010 (excluding re-reads and probably not all-inclusive, but close):

  1. Talk of the Town by Lisa Wingate
  2. Covet by J.R. Ward
  3. My Soul to Lose by Rachel Vincent
  4. Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk
  5. Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning
  6. Frostbite by Richelle Mead
  7. Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead
  8. Blood Promise by Richelle Mead
  9. The Devouring by Simon Holt
  10. Midnight’s Daughter by Karen Chance
  11. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
  12. Wolf Signs by Vivien Arend
  13. Lover Mine by J.R. Ward
  14. Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs
  15. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
  16. Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
  17. Three Days to Dead by Kelly Meding
  18. The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong
  19. The Apothecary’s Daughter by Julie Klassen
  20. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
  21. Speed Dating by Nancy Warren
  22. Dancing in the Moonlight by RaeAnne Thayne
  23. Old School by Tobias Wolff
  24. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

And quite a few of those were the short, free ebooks I got from the Kindle. Sad, I tell you, sad!
Before you try to tell me that it's not that bad, you must understand that when I say I have a voracious reading appetite, I mean it! Most average-length paperbacks take me one sitting. I guess I just haven't been spending any time sitting lately...

Anyway, my current/on-going reads:

  1. Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey
  2. A Place to Come To by Robert Penn Warren
  3. Solstice by Simon Holt
  4. Regina in the Sun by R.G. Alexander
  5. Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
And as soon as Amazon sends them to me:

  1. Linger by Maggie Stiefvater
  2. Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead

I want suggestions! As you can see, I have quite the varied taste, so I'm open to just about anything.
NOTE: I will not start any on-going series, like The Hunger Games, until they are complete. I've learned my lesson the hard way too many time.

Recommendations?

Wow Summer you truly do have an appetite for reading and I LOVE IT! I have to say I love to read but you honestly put me all to shame! Especially the list you are considering small, that's okay though I realize I'm not as devoted as some!

I'm currently reading Eat Pray Love, I'm about to pick up Sugar Queen at the library today, I will be reading Matched on Monday, Forgive My Fins on Friday and by then I should have The Forest of Hands and Teeth and Dead Tossed Waves!!! I'm excited. Hopefully that gives you a few choices, if not I'm sure you'll have others soon enough!

O.k. you can read musch faster than I can so don't go so hard on yourself. I'm ashamed at my reading lately. I'm currently reading A Soft Place to Land by Susna Rebecca White. I'm reading for my book club. Not my normal read but I like it. I'm going to start the Hunger Games soon along with the Stephanie Meyers Novella.
Go Summer!

I like the idea of not starting a series before it's finished...but I can never seem to stop myself.

And I'm so sad, I think I'll have to start buying more books (apologies to my bank account) because I'm having a lot of trouble finding the books I want to read here in Germany. It's been slow going this year for me too, so I don't really have any recommendations. But I'll watch your list and add to mine!

That's a great list of books! You shouldn't beat yourself up! When I started writing I started reading less than I used to. I still don't read as much, but I try to make time for it everyday.

Recommendations: I loved the zombie books "the Forest of Hands and Teeth" and "The Dead Tossed Waves" by Carrie Ryan. I also loved "Me and Mr. Darcy" by Alexandra Potter.

Sorry to say I am not a great reader, not as much as I was. I do admire your choice of books , also I enjoyed the post.

Enjoy your day.

uh....have you even SEEN my list? It's so short right now it's pitiful. haha!

I'm reading writing books right now so idk.

The new Sookie is out...

One my most recent all time faves, The Thirteenth Tale will enthrall you.

Drood is finally in paperback...still huge but paperback.

That's all I got before my morning coffee...or rather during my morning coffee. Wait until you're working again. Your list will shrink again. :(

So, I finally got the Vampire Academy Series from the library, and I am way excited to start reading them, mostly because you recommended them :)

I just read the Demon's Lexicon, and the Demon's Covenant by Sarah Rees Brennan and loved both of them. Like REALLY loved them. They're YA/urban fantasy/kind of paranormal romancey, so they're totally my thing :)

You must tell me how you like Blood Meridian. I've heard good things about it.

One of my favs that doesn't show up on a lot of 'best of' lists is The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. If you saw the movie and didn't like it, don't worry--the book is much better.

I second JP's suggestion, it was phenomenal.

I also suggest:

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
100 Years of Solitude by G.G. Marquez
The English Patient...but you already know that I love that book, and you may have already read it. (I can't remember)

And anything by Cormac. He's the sh*t.

For fun, fluffy reading I also love me some hilarious Steph Plum series (Janet Evanovich) ,
and the Charlaine Harris Sookie books (though I didn't love this recent one, Dead in the Family)

Last year I read hundreds of books (and wrote 1 1/2 novels), this year my list is meager, pitiful. The 'drama' has usurped too much of my time. (though I too read many off your list)

Peace out-
L

I recommend any book by Lincoln and Child. The Relic is a good place to begin.

That's quite a list and I thought mine was bad.

If you want a laugh anything by Nick Hornby or I love you Beth Cooper was hilarous.

You can read paperbacks in one sitting too? I used to sit in B&N and read fantasy novels start to finish in the coffee shop in 2- 3 hrs. I think the staff disliked me for it, but I never creased the spine, and always bought coffee, so I didn't guilt too much over it. :)

Read anything by Mark Helprin, I'd say. A Winter's Tale is lyrical and lovely (magical realism), and A Soldier of the Great War is heartbreaking and epic. Can't go wrong with Helprin.

And Terry Pratchett.

:D

I haven't read ANY of the books on your list! Crazy! I'd suggest Wasted by Nicola Morgan (you can get it from the Book Depository if you're overseas). It's a really different read!

There are so many good books that are going to come out in the next few months. You should definitely read "The Mockingbirds" by Daisy Whitney. It comes out in Nov. It was fantastic!!

I don't think this is a pathetic reading list whatsoever. Some people actually have a life outside of books. I'm not one, but most of the people I know do. ;)

I love that you are doing this...I think I will too...maybe on Monday.
