Tales from Insomina

I haven't blogged at all since NaNoWriMo, started. I wasn't planning to, really, but last night I ended up going to Urgent Care and the doc gave me some prednisone. Now I'm completely wired at 2:30 AM, have only slept for about an hour and a half total tonight, and can't concentrate on anything, so...

How's everyone doing? I thought I'd done well in getting my stressful November stuff out of the way, but turned out not to be quite so. However, now I'm truly done with the pre-Thanksgiving stuff, and I'm still slightly ahead of the word count game! It's been mostly pure stubbornness and determination recently, especially since I got sick earlier this week. I know I can quit at any time, but that's not how I roll. I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it on top of school, and that's what I'm going to do.

My story is shaping up deliciously weird. It's also contemporary YA, and this is the first time I've written in the genre. I've somewhat enjoyed really thinking back to my high school days, but I'm mostly glad that I'm now a rational, competent adult. It's tricky writing a teenager, though, as all my first instincts are to go with adult reactions when they aren't appropriate. I was lucky enough to spend some time in the adolescent unit at my psych clinical a few times recently, and I really paid attention to how the teens acted and talked to each other and what their thought processes and problem-solving skills seemed to be. Very interesting.

I hope everyone is enjoying the month of unfettered writing, whether caught up on wordcount or not officially participating. For me, NaNoWriMo is a month-long holiday, and while I'm not getting to enjoy it quite as much as I have in years past, it's still a time to celebrate!

Happy writing!
